Many of us face challenges every day. There are some challenges that we welcome. Then there are those that we fear, this is where courage comes in. Courage is generally defined as the ability to conquer fear. Courage is not merely putting up with an uncomfortable situation, such as putting up with an annoying boss. That requires patience and your ability to cope.
Some people might assume that because you are afraid of something you don't have courage. When you have a fear of something, you basically have two choices. You can face your fear or you can avoid it. When you face it, that is courage. Courage is what you use to overcome a fear. Before we continue to talk about courage, let's take a moment to define what fear really is.
Fear is basically not knowing what is going to happen or how a situation is going to turn out. For example, a guy may see a girl that he would like to ask out for a date, but he is afraid to ask her out. What is he actually afraid of? The fear doesn't lie in his asking, but the fear is rejection, not knowing what her response will be.
Sometimes courage involves not taking the clear and easy path. Then again, courage may involve taking the way that may just seem easy to some. Teenagers face this all the time when they are faced with peer pressure to do something that they know is wrong or dangerous. The fear in this case is how their friends might react to them because they didn't do the popular thing.
If you feel you lack courage (that is avoiding a fear instead of facing it) you should know that courage is not something that you pull out of your pocket in moments of need or in emergencies. Nor is courage something that can be handed to you through lessons. Some people believe that courage is a way of life; your using it strengthens your courage. The more you use courage the more courage you will have.
Try strengthening your courage by facing a small task or situation that you may have avoided for a while, maybe one you have avoided all your life. Also, remember your courage isn't determined by how well you do in a challenging situation. Rather, it is determined by the fact that you did face the situation.
